ADHD Treatment
What to Do After a Diagnosis
When your child, teenager, or even you receive an ADHD diagnosis, it can be hard to know where to start with treatment. Many families feel overwhelmed at this stage. You may have answers, but still feel unsure about what will actually help.
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental difference. Some aspects of ADHD are part of how an ADHD brain is wired, including how information is processed, and are not things that need to be changed. Effective ADHD treatment focuses on understanding those differences, identifying strengths, and building supports that help individuals function successfully in a world that is not always designed with neurodivergent brains in mind.
At Thriving Child Center, ADHD treatment is about helping children, teens, and adults understand themselves, feel supported, and develop tools that actually work in real life. A neuro-affirming approach does not mean removing expectations or avoiding challenge. It means setting expectations that are realistic, developmentally appropriate, and paired with the supports individuals need to meet them.
What does effective
ADHD treatment look like?
Effective ADHD treatment in a psychology practice focuses on helping individuals and families work with an ADHD brain, not against it.
ADHD-affirming treatment often includes:
Understanding how ADHD affects thinking, behavior, and emotions
Identifying strengths as well as challenges
Creating structure and support for executive functioning
Adjusting expectations so they are fair, realistic, and growth-oriented
Strengthening relationships rather than increasing conflict
Our goal is to help families support their child’s goals while avoiding approaches that are overly punitive, shame-based, or damaging to connection. Support and understanding are not about lowering standards, but about helping children build the skills they need to succeed at school, at home, and in their relationships.
How do you
help parents
treat ADHD?
One of the primary ways we support families with ADHD is through parent-focused work.
Most parents were never trained in ADHD. When children struggle with attention, impulse control, or follow-through, it can easily look like defiance or lack of motivation. In reality, many of these behaviors reflect differences in executive functioning and nervous system regulation associated with ADHD.
At Thriving Child Center, we help parents:
Understand why their child behaves the way they do
Learn how ADHD affects emotional regulation and executive functioning
Set expectations that make sense for their child’s developmental profile
Support independence without pushing in ways that are unfair or counterproductive
Reduce conflict while still holding appropriate boundaries
We often use evidence-based parent management training approaches and family therapy to help parents and children work together to create plans that allow everyone in the family to function more successfully.
Do you work directly with
children and teens with ADHD?
Yes. In some cases, we work directly with children and adolescents to help them better understand themselves and their brains.
Direct work with kids and teens may include:
Building insight into strengths and challenges
Developing strategies to support executive functioning
Improving organization, planning, and follow-through
Supporting emotional regulation
Increasing self-acceptance and confidence
When children and teens understand how their brains work, it often becomes easier for them to advocate for themselves and navigate school, friendships, and daily responsibilities with more confidence.
How does ADHD
treatment support
school success?
ADHD often affects learning, organization, and classroom behavior. Support at school is an important part of effective treatment.
At Thriving Child Center, we can collaborate with schools to help ensure children receive appropriate accommodations. Our educational consultant can attend school meetings, including IEP or 504 meetings, to help translate clinical recommendations into practical supports.
This collaboration helps schools better understand ADHD and helps families advocate for accommodations that are fair, appropriate, and meaningful.
What does ADHD treatment
look like for adults?
ADHD treatment is not just for children. Many adults seek treatment after years of struggling without understanding why.
For adults, ADHD treatment focuses on:
Understanding personal strengths and challenges
Creating systems that support executive functioning
Setting goals that align with how an ADHD brain works
Reducing shame and self-blame
Improving functioning at work, school, and in relationships
Our clinicians use neuro-affirming, neurodevelopmentally informed approaches to help adults build strategies that are sustainable, respectful of their brains, and realistic.
Do your clinicians
specialize in ADHD?
Yes. Our clinicians are highly trained in ADHD and related conditions. Many have advanced training, research experience, and publications in this area.
We also understand that ADHD often co-occurs with other concerns, including anxiety, learning differences, autism, and mood-related challenges. Our treatment approach reflects this complexity and avoids one-size-fits-all solutions.
ADHD treatment for
adoptive and foster families
We have clinicians who specialize in working with children and families in adoptive and foster care settings, where ADHD and other neurodevelopmental and emotional challenges often overlap.
We are happy to help connect families with clinicians who have specific expertise in these areas.
Where is ADHD

Our approach to
ADHD treatment
Our goal at Thriving Child Center is to provide information that actually helps, tools that actually work, and a framework that helps individuals and families feel supported, understood, and less alone.
ADHD treatment is not about fixing who someone is. It is about understanding how their brain works and creating an environment where they can thrive.
